THE WORD OF LOVE

Matthew 27: 39-49

Verse 46 – My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?

1. The setting is one of loneliness.

(Hebrews 2:18 - Because He Himself suffered being made like His brothers in every way, He is able to help those who are being tempted.)

(Proverbs 18:24 – But there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.)

2. The cross speaks about lostness.

(Verse 46 – Why has Thou forsaken Me?)

(II Cor. 5:21 – He made Him, to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.)

3. The cross speaks about lessons for living.

(Verse 46 – My God, My God.)

(Job 13:15 – Though He slay Me, yet I will trust in God.)

(Mark 16:7 – Go tell His disciples and Peter.)

How Should We Respond

1. Turn from sin and trust Christ.

(Romans 3:22 – We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.)

2. Live in a state of gratitude.

(Romans 5:11 – Now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God, all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us, making us friends with God.)

3. When tempted, remember what Christ has done.

(I Peter 1:18-19 – God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors, He paid for you the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.)

4. Tell others the good news.
