HOW TO GET OVER A HURT

God's Answer to Your Needs

“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Why Forgive?

1. God HAS FORGIVEN ME

Job 5:2 (GN) "To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do.

3. I'll need FORGIVENESS IN THE FUTURE

Mark 11:25 (LB) "When you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive you your sins too. "

How to Get Over a Hurt

1. Never RETALIATE!

Memory Verse: Proverbs 20:22 (GN) "Don't take it on yourself to repay a wrong. Trust the Lord and He will make it right. 

2. Deal with it IMMEDIATELY

Ephesians 4:26 (LB) "Don't sin by nursing your grudge. Don't let the sun go down with you still angry--get

Matthew 5:24 (GN) ... go at once to make peace with your brother. . . "

3. Forgive THEM WHETHER THEY ASK OR NOT

Ephesians 4:32 (JB) Forgive each other as readily as God forgave you in Christ."

4. DO GOOD to them.

Luke 6:27-28, 35 (GN) "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you ... you will have a great reward. . . "

FREEDOM FROM GUILT

Psalm 25:18 – Look on my affliction and my pain, and forgive all my sins.

HOW DO WE GET RID OF GUILT?

I. First remember God forgives instantly.

HOW TO APPLY FORGIVENESS INSTANTLY

A. Remember God’s position.

Nehemiah 9:17 –You are a God of forgiveness always ready to pardon.

B. Trust God’s promise.

Isaiah 55:7 – God is merciful and quick to forgive.

II. Remember God forgives completely. 

A.    

1. An example: The father of the prodigal son.

B. How to know forgiveness is complete.

1. Christ paid the debt for every sin.

Colossians 2:13-14 – He has forgiven all your sins, He has utterly wiped out the evidence of broken commandments which always hung over our heads, and has completely annulled it by nailing it to the cross.

2. Remember, God forgets.

Jeremiah 31:34 – I, the Lord, will forgive and forget their sins.

III. Remember that God forgives more than once.

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

A. God does not get tired of our coming to Him.

1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins to God, He will keep His promise and do what is right.  He will forgive our sins and make us learn from our wrong doing.

B. Learn to keep short accounts.

Hebrews 7:25 – (Christ) Is always interceding on our behalf.

IV. Finally notice that God forgives freely.

Romans 3:23-24 – All of us have sinned, yet now God declares us not guilty of offending Him IF we trust in Jesus Christ who freely takes away our sins.

Ephesians 2:8-9 – For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith.  It is not your own doing, but God’s gift.  There is nothing to boast of, since it is not the result of your own efforts.

HOW TO BE FORGIVEN

• Admit the wrong.
• Believe what Christ did on the cross.
• Commit your life to following Jesus.
• Gratitude must be expressed.

Romans 8:1 – There is no condemnation for those who live in union with Christ Jesus.

RESPONDING TO INTIMIDATION

1 Peter 3:13-22

TWO WAYS TO RESPOND

1. Keep your mind on the will of God.

Verse 17 – It is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

HOW TO DEVELOP THIS LIFESTYLE

• Be zealous for what is good.

Verse 13 – Who is going to harm you if you are eager (or zealous) to do good?

• Don’t be intimidated or troubled.

Verse 14 – Do not fear what they fear, do not be frightened.

• Keep a life style of Holiness.

Verse 15 – But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.

FOUR DESCRIPTIVE WORDS

• Admit that you are in control.
• Submit your all to God.
• Commit your will to His way.
• Transmit God’s love to others.

Verse 15 – Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

Verse 16 – Respond with gentleness and respect.

A MODEL FOR COPING

Acts 4:23-31

Verse 29 – Consider their threats.

Verse 29 – Enable your servants to speak with boldness.

Verse 30 – Stretch out your hand to heal.

Verse 31 – They were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

• Keep a clear conscience.

Verse 16 – Keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

2. Keep your faith in the risen Christ.

Verses 18 & 22 – Christ also suffered.  He died once for the sins of all as guilty sinners, although He Himself was innocent of any sin at any time, that He might bring us safely home to God.  But through His body died, His Spirit lived on, and now Christ is in heaven sitting in the place of honor next to God the Father.

IDENTIFY WITH CHRIST MEANS:

• Our sins are forgiven.
• We will suffer as He did.
• He will take us home to heaven.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES CHRISTMAS MAKE?

Because Jesus came at Christmas ...

1.  MY PAST CAN BE FORGIVEN

Romans 3:23-24 (LB)"All of us have sinned... yet now God declares us `not guilty' of offending him IF we trust in Jesus Christ who freely takes away our sins."

2 Corinthians 5:17 (Ph)"If anyone is in Christ, he becomes a new person altogether; the past is finished and gone, everything becomes fresh and new."

2.  MY PRESENT PROBLEMS CAN BE MANAGED

Philippians 4:13 (GN)"I have the strength to face all conditions by the power Christ gives me."

Romans 8:32 (Ph)"... God gave us his own son - can we not trust such a God to give us ... everything else that we need?"

3.  MY FUTURE CAN BE GUARANTEED

Hebrews 2:14-15 (GN) "... Jesus became like us ... (to) set free those who were slaves all their lives because of their fear of death."

Three Christmas Gifts to you from God

1. Ephesians 1:4-7 (GN)"Let us praise God for the FREE GIFT he gave us in his Son... we are set free, our sins are forgiven."

• I DON’T HAVE TO forgettable.

3. I CAN be forgiven.
