March 6 2016 The Word Of Humanity

THE WORD OF HUMANITY

John 19:28-30

Verse 28 – I thirst.

1. Truth: It was the cry of humanity.

John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us.

Hebrews 2:18 – Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.

2. Truth: It was the cry of healing.

2 Corinthians 5:14 – Because we are convinced that One (Christ) died for all.

Hebrews 4:15 – For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have One who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet was without sin.

1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

3. Truth: It was the cry to act.

Matthew 25:37 – Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?  And He will tell them, I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you were doing it to Me.

Proverbs 25:21 – If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat.  If they are thirsty give them water to drink.

4. Truth: It was the cry to drink.

John 7:38 – He who believes on Me out of him shall flow rivers of living water.

How to form the union with Christ

  • Realize what you’re thirsty for.

Psalm 63:1 – O God, you are my God and I long for You.  My whole being desires You.  Like a dry worn out and waterless land, my soul is thirsty for You.

  • Realize that Jesus understands your pain.

Isaiah 53:4-5 – He took our suffering on Himself and felt our pain for us.  He was wounded for the wrong we did and crushed for the evil we did.  The punishment which made us well was given to Him and we are healed because of His wounds.

  • Stop looking for satisfaction everywhere else.

John 7:37-38 – On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “If you are thirsty, come to Me!”  “If you believe in Me, come and drink, for the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within.

April 12 2015 When We Need 20-20 Vision

WHEN WE NEED 20-20 VISION

Matthew 6:22-23 – The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.

Mark 8:17-29

AN EMBARRASSING MISUNDERSTANDING

Mark 8:13-21 – Then Jesus got into the boat and crossed to the other side.  The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had in the boat. Be careful, Jesus warned. Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod. The disciples discussed why Jesus had said this and they decided it was because they hadn’t brought bread with them. Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your minds closed? You have eyes, but now don’t really see! You have ears, but you don’t really listen. Remember when I divided five loaves of bread for the five thousand? How many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces of food? They said, twelve. And when I divided seven loaves of bread for the four thousand, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces of food? They said, seven. Then Jesus said, and you still don’t understand yet?

WHAT KEEPS ME FROM 20-20 VISION?

1. Pride.

“Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees.”

2. Short term thinking.

“The disciples discussed why Jesus had said this and they decided it was because they hadn’t brought bread with them!”

3. Short term memory.

“Remember the two miracles?”

A PROGRESSIVE MIRACLE

Mark 8:22 – They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village.

THREE CONDITIONS FOR A MIRACLE

1. When some body cares.

2. When we get close to Jesus.

3. When we trust Jesus to lead us.

Mark 8:23-26 – Then Jesus spit on the man’s eyes and put His hands on him, and then asked, do you see anything? The man looked up and said, I see people but they look like trees walking around. So Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes a second time. Then his eyes were opened fully, his sight was restored completely, and he saw everything clearly. Jesus sent him home, saying, don’t go back into town.

THREE LESSONS ABOUT 20-20 VISION

1. My spiritual vision grows in stages.

2. The test of my vision is how I see other people.

3. Jesus heals my sight three ways:

  • My focus gets sharper.
  • My perspective gets larger.
  • Makes my vision clearer.

Job 34:32 – Teach me what I cannot see; and if I’ve done wrong, I won’t do it again!

A CLARIFYING QUESTION

Mark 8:27-29 – Then Jesus asked them, who do people say I am? They replied, some say you are John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others you’re one of the other prophets. But what about you, Jesus asked, who do you say I am? Peter said, You are the Christ, the Messiah!

How I see Jesus determines how clearly I see everything else.

May 19 2013 The Giant Of Illness

FIVE KEYS TO CONQUERING THE GIANT OF ILLNESS

1. L ______________ GOD'S ____________ WHEN I AM WEAK.

Psalm 69:29“I am suffering and in pain. Rescue me, O God, by your saving power.”

2 Corinthians 12:8-10 “Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away.  Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power  works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast  about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can  work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my  weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2. L _____________ GOD’S ___________________ IN MY ILLNESS

James 1:2-4“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

3. L ____________ TO GOD FOR ______________.

James 5:14-15 “Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.”

3 Ways God Heals:

__________________________

ANSWERED PRAYERS

__________________________

1 Timothy 5:23“Don’t drink only water. You ought to drink a little wine for the sake of your stomach because you are sick so often.”

Memory Verse: “The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.”- Psalm 41:3

4. L _____________ FOR MY __________________.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18“For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”

March 17 2013 Relationship Rescue: Dealing With Divorce

Dealing With Divorce

Mark 10:2-12 “Some Pharisees came and tried to trap [Jesus] with this question: ‘Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?’ ‘What did Moses say about divorce?’ Jesus asked them. ‘Well, he permitted it,’ they replied. ‘He said a man merely has to write his wife an official letter of divorce and send her away.’ But Jesus responded, ‘He wrote those instructions only as a concession to your hard-hearted wickedness. But God's plan was seen from the beginning of creation, for 'He made them male and female.' 'This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.' Since they are no longer two but one, let no one separate them, for God has joined them together.’ Later, when he was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again. He told them, ‘Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and remarries, she commits adultery.’”

Jesus On Divorce:

  • Divorce Breaks the heart of God
  • Divorce is allowed in cases of adultery, abandonment, and abuse but not necessitated
