Prevailing In Personal Relationships

Romans 12:14-21

Six Ways to Win in Personal Relationships

1. Return good for evil.

Romans 12:14 – Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse.

Matthew 5:44 – Jesus said, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

Two Examples:

  • Jesus
  • Stephen

2. Identify with others.

Romans 12:15 – Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

3. Be open minded to others.

Romans 12:16 – Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.

4. Treat others with respect.

Romans 12:17 – Do not repay anyone evil for evil.

5. Do all you can to keep the peace.

Romans 12:18 – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Two Qualifications

  • If it is possible
  • As far

6. Remove revenge from our life.

Romans 12:19-21 – Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: It is Mine to avenge, I will repay, says the Lord.  On the contrary if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Three Reasons

  • It’s the Lord’s task.
  • May move that person to Christ.
  • Vengeance means we are conquered by evil.

November 11 2012 The Choice Of Peace

THE CHOICE OF PEACE

Matthew 5:9 - Happy are the peacemakers for they will be called the sons of God.

Misconception:
1. Peace making is not avoiding.
2. Peace making is not appeasement.
3. It’s actively seeking to resolve the conflict.

I. Why should I be a peacemaker?

1. Unresolved conflicts block my fellowship with God.
1 John 4:20 - If anyone says I love God yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

2. It can prevent answered prayers.
1 Peter 3:7 - Husbands in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
Matthew 5:23 - Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and then remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, first go and be reconciled to your brother.

3. It hinders my happiness.
Job 18:4 - You are only hurting yourself with your anger.

II. How can we be a peacemaker?

1. You need to plan a peace conference.
Matthew 5:23-24 - If you remember your brother has something against you, go at once to make peace.

2. You need to empathize with their feelings.
Philippians 2:4 - None of you should think only of his own affairs, but consider other people’s interests also.

3. You attack the problem, not the person.
Proverbs 15:1 - A gentle answer quiets anger, but a harsh one stirs it up.
Ephesians 4:29 - Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed.

4. Cooperate as much as possible.
Romans 12:18 - Do everything possible on your part to live at peace with all men.
Romans 16:17 - I urge your, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way, keep away from them.
James 3:17 - Peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of goodness.

5. You emphasize reconciliation, not resolution.
2 Corinthians. 5:18 - God has reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gives us the ministry of reconciliation.

Where To Start:
Colossians 3:15 - Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.

How To Handle Loneliness

II Timothy 4:6 - 22

Four Causes Of Loneliness

1. Transitions in life.
Verse 6 - I am already being poured out like a drink offering and the time has come for my departure.

Verses 7 & 8 - I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness.

2. Separation.
Verse 9 - Do your best to come to me quickly.

Verse 21 - Do your best to get here before winter.

3. Opposition.
Verse 14 - Alexander, the metal worker, did a great deal of harm.

Definition of harm:

4. Rejection.
Verse 16 - At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me.

4 Steps Through Loneliness

1. Utilize your time.
Verses 12 - 13 - I sent Tychicus to Ephesus and when you come bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas and my scrolls, especially the parchments.

2. Minimize the hurt.
Verse 16 - No one came to my support but may it not be held against them.

3. Recognize God's Presence.
Verse 17 - The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength.

John 14:18 - I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you.

Example of David, Psalm 139 - Where can I get away from your presence? If I go up to heaven you are there. Anywhere on earth, you are there. I can’t get away from you.

4. Empathize with other people's needs.
Verse 17 - The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.

Mark 15:34 - “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
